I’ve been a big admirer of Jlin since I heard her track ‘Erotic Heat’ on Planet Mu’s ‘Bangs and Works‘ Comp (thanks Spencer Longo) , and am excited to report that we will be working together on a collaborative record over the next few months. A first draft of a track was posted to her soundcloud yesterday, and it’s already sounding awesome!

This weekend Mat and I played our first live show as , a live techno project involving FM synthesis, vocal processing, MFB Drumkomputer, x0xb0x and Drumfire percussive synth. We made a recording, it takes about 5 minutes to pick up, but I’m really happy with where it went! Let me know what you think of it!

Confirmed for Activating the Medium 2012, Collaborations in the works!

Excited to be confirmed for 23 Five’s Activating the Medium Festival in San Francisco, April 2012 with Bevin Blechtum and others.

Conceiving of the piece now in collaboration with the Iranian philosopher Reza Negarestani, whose work I adore. The theme is loosely set as ‘Dark Ecology’, which I feel nicely compliments his own theories of telluric insurgency and universal agendas. I will post updates as the piece develops!

In other news, I’m also stoked to report that I’ll be collaborating with Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, on some music over the winter. Listen to his jams here.

I also just posted my Ph.D application for 2012. Wish me luck!

Really grateful that Karl took the time to write this detailed and thoughtful review of CAR for his blog ‘Listless Ennui’

Throughout, some sound samples commonly heard by motorists are employed to interesting effect: sirens, scanning through radio stations, power windows, and a surprise bit that made me rewind and laugh out loud. As you naturally focus your attention on the road, the music allows you to just drive, but then reminds you now and again that it’s there, sonically augmenting your drive.

Another really positive Twitter experience! Follow Karl’s thoughts here @kaffeenhed. There are still CD copies available of CAR available from me directly, and tapes available from Third Sex. Ask and ye shall receive.

With Scott Arford, so it’s safe to say it is going to work your speakers

Four tracks are done, need to do another four and then I’m done. I’m completely stoked to be doing the first video with Flight 404 and 7EV3. This record is about pushing the possibilities of processing, and Robert and Seve both represent that practice in their respective media and I’m thrilled to be collaborating with them on this. Now just need to find a label.

I think I’m playing a show with Laurel Halo on Oct 1 too, will post the flyer when I get it. Excited to play with her, I have liked the stuff I have heard!

Oh, and read Cyclonopedia.

CAR review in Aquarius

HERNDON, HOLLY “Car” (Third Sex) cassette
Brand new release from local soundscaper / noisemaker Holly Herndon, a tape designed specifically for where most tapes get listened too. Yep, the car! This recent resurgence in tape releases has had most of us scrambling to find tape players, going to the Goodwill looking for tapedecks, buying Walkman’s (Walkmen?) at Radio Shack, but one place tapes still seem to be ubiquitous, is of course in CARS. Not new cars, it’s all cd players now, soon to be MP3 player docks exclusively we imagine, or who knows, maybe you’ll be able to sync up your car stereo to your iTunes, but for now, those of you with a tape player in your car, or anyone with a tape player period, should check out Herndon’s Car, which was created with the automobile driver, weird sound enthusiast in mind, starting with experiments using sine wave sweeps of popular car models, not to mention random samplings of FM radio (do we hear “Owner Of A Lonely Heart”?).
Thick swaths of pulsing sound, streaks of static, layered low end swells, the sound of engine rumbles merged with crackling white noise creating hazy fields of static, which occasionally give way to some flipping through the dial, only to slip right back into heaving sheets of soft focus hiss and whir, throbbing and pulsing subtly within clouds of crunchy static, slipping into softly roiling sprawls of low end hum, which in turn pulse rhythmically, the sounds hypnotic and minimal, like some fractured automobile sourced heroin house. Electric windows are rolled down, their sounds processed and looped into weridly mesmerizing mechanical dronescapes, sounding not unlike The User’s ink jet printer symphonies.
Killer stuff, and on headphones it sounds amazing, we can only imagine how it sounds cranked in the car.
